Characteristics

Habitat
Found in a variety of habitats including cloud forests, high-altitude grasslands (p ramos), and dry forests.
When to Find It
Active year-round; they do not hibernate due to the lack of extreme seasonal temperature shifts in their range.

Ecological Role
Acts as a major seed disperser in Andean ecosystems. They are known to climb high into trees to feed on fruit and bromeliads.
Easily Confused With
Sun bears also have chest markings, but they are found in Southeast Asia and are significantly smaller with shorter fur. Spectacled bears are the only bears in South America.
Observation Tips
Extremely shy and elusive. They are best observed in protected areas like Machu Picchu or the Andean foothills using binoculars from a distance to avoid disturbance.
Interesting Facts
They are the last remaining species of the 'short-faced' bear subfamily (Tremarctinae) and are more closely related to the extinct Giant Short-Faced Bear than to modern grizzlies.
