Aggregating Anemone
Scientific Name: Anthopleura elegantissima
Category: other

Brief Description
A small sea anemone often found in colonies attached to rocks in the intertidal zone.
Characteristics
It has a central mouth surrounded by short, numerous tentacles. When out of water, it retracts into a squishy, olive-green or brownish blob often covered in sand or shell fragments for moisture and camoflauge.
Habitat
Intertidal zones, specifically on rocky shores, tide pools, and pier pilings.
When to Find It
Visible during low tide year-round.
Conservation Status
Common
Ecological Role
Provides habitat for symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) and serves as a predator of small crustaceans and snails while being prey for certain sea slugs and snails.
Easily Confused With
Moonglow Anemone (Anthopleura artemisia) which usually buries its column in sand and Giant Green Anemone which is much larger and solitary.
Observation Tips
Look for them at low tide in rocky areas. Avoid touching them directly with bare skin as their stinging cells (nematocysts) can cause irritation to some, and poke them gently if at all to avoid damaging their delicate structures.
Interesting Facts
These anemones are known for being territorial; they use specialized stinging tentacles called acrorhagi to fight off genetically different anemones to maintain their colony space.
