Brief Description

The maned wolf is the largest canid in South America, resembling a fox with long legs.

Characteristics

Reddish-orange coat, long black legs, black mane along the neck and shoulders, large erect ears, and a white tail tip.

Habitat

Open and semi-open habitats, particularly grasslands, savannas (Cerrado), shrublands, and swampy areas in South America.

When to Find It

Most active during twilight and nighttime (crepuscular and nocturnal).

Ecological Role

Acts as an important seed disperser, particularly for the wolf apple (Solanum lycocarpum), and helps control populations of small rodents and insects.

Easily Confused With

Red fox or dhole, but the maned wolf is significantly taller with extremely long, stilt-like legs and unique markings.

Observation Tips

Best observed in protected reserves within the Brazilian Cerrado during early morning or dusk using binoculars to maintain a safe distance.

Interesting Facts

Despite its name and fox-like appearance, it is not closely related to true wolves or foxes, but belongs to its own unique genus. Its strong-smelling urine has earned it the nickname 'skunk wolf'.
