Characteristics
Stocky body, small head, and short legs. Wild types have pale grey plumage with two black bands on each wing and an iridescent neck, but feral populations exhibit a wide variety of colors and patterns including white, brown, and black.
Habitat
Originally cliffs and rock ledges, now highly adapted to urban areas, cities, parks, and agricultural land worldwide.
When to Find It
Year-round resident in most of its range, including tropical Queensland.

Acts as a prey species for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons. Can also act as a seed disperser, though primarily a scavenger in cities.
Easily Confused With
Spotted Dove (Streptopelia chinensis) has a long tail and a spotted neck patch. Crested Pigeon (Ocyphaps lophotes) has a distinct crest on its head.
Observation Tips
Very common and approachable in parks and city centers. Often seen walking on the ground foraging for food scraps.
Interesting Facts
Domesticated thousands of years ago, they were used to carry messages due to their strong homing instinct. Feral pigeons are descendants of these domestic birds.
