Scarlet Ibis

Scientific Name: Eudocimus ruber

Category: bird

Scarlet Ibis

Brief Description

A medium-sized wading bird known for its striking, brilliant red plumage and long, downward-curving bill.

Characteristics

Vibrant scarlet feathers over the entire body except for black wingtips. It has a long, slender, decurved bill and pinkish-red legs and feet. Juveniles are greyish-brown with white underparts.

Habitat

Tropical wetlands, coastal mangroves, mudflats, and estuaries across northern South America and parts of the Caribbean.

When to Find It

Diurnal; most active during the day. Breeding occurs during the rainy season.

Conservation Status

Least Concern (IUCN), though populations are protected in many regions due to habitat loss.

Ecological Role

As a predator of crustaceans, insects, and small fish, it helps regulate prey populations. Their presence is often used as an indicator of wetland health.

Easily Confused With

White Ibis (Eudocimus albus), which is identical in shape but white. Roseate Spoonbill, which is pink but has a flat, spoon-shaped bill.

Observation Tips

Look for them in large colonies in mangrove forests. They are best observed from a distance using binoculars to avoid disturbing their nesting or feeding grounds.

Interesting Facts

The bird's brilliant red color comes from carotene pigments found in the shrimp and crabs they eat. In captivity, their color can fade if their diet lacks these specific nutrients.
