Red Velvet Mite
Scientific Name: Trombidiidae
Category: other

Brief Description
A bright red, arachnid that is easily recognized by its vibrant scarlet color and velvety appearance.
Characteristics
Oval-shaped body covered in a dense layer of fine hairs that give it a velvet-like texture; bright orange to deep red in color; four pairs of legs in adults; relatively large for a mite (up to 1cm).
Habitat
Typically found in leaf litter, soil, gardens, and occasionally crawling on rocks or pavement after rain.
When to Find It
Most commonly observed in spring and early summer, often appearing in large numbers after rainfall.
Conservation Status
Not Evaluated
Ecological Role
Adults are active predators of small insects and their eggs, helping to regulate populations of agricultural pests. Larvae are typically parasites on other arthropods.
Easily Confused With
Spider mites (which are much smaller and usually found on the undersides of leaves) and Clover mites (which are smaller, more brownish-red, and have extremely long front legs).
Observation Tips
Look for them on stone walls or garden soil on sunny days following a rainstorm. Handle them gently or not at all, as they are fragile and can leave a red stain if crushed.
Interesting Facts
Despite their bright 'warning' color, they are not toxic to humans. Their oil, used by some cultures in traditional medicine, is currently being researched for potential immunomodulatory properties.
