Pennant Coralfish

Brief Description
A striking black, white, and yellow reef-dwelling fish recognizable by its long, white trailing dorsal fin filament.
Characteristics
Flat, disc-shaped body with vertical black and white bands. The second dorsal spine is extremely elongated into a white banner. It has a yellow posterior dorsal fin and caudal fin.
Habitat
Outer lagoon and seaward reefs, often in relatively deep water down to 75 meters.
When to Find It
Diurnal; most active during daylight hours throughout the year.

Ecological Role
Feeds primarily on zooplankton in the water column and occasionally on benthic invertebrates, playing a role in the reef food web.
Easily Confused With
Schooling Bannerfish (Heniochus diphreutes). The Pennant Coralfish has a more angular anal fin and a longer snout compared to the Schooling Bannerfish. Moorish Idols are also similar but have much more yellow on the body and a tubular snout.
Observation Tips
Look for them in pairs or small groups near reef drop-offs. They are generally peaceful and move gracefully through the water column.
Interesting Facts
They are sometimes called 'Poor Man's Moorish Idol' because they are easier to care for in aquariums than the more delicate Moorish Idol.
