Deciduous and mixed forests, marshes, and agricultural areas. They are highly adaptable and frequently live in urban and suburban environments.
When to Find It
Active year-round, though they may sleep for long periods in dens during extremely cold winter weather. Primarily nocturnal or crepuscular.

Ecological Role
As omnivores, they help control insect and small rodent populations and assist in seed dispersal through their varied diet. They also serve as prey for larger predators.
Easily Confused With
Ring-tailed cats and Coatis. Raccoons are distinguished by their heavier build and specific facial mask compared to the more slender ring-tailed cat.
Observation Tips
Look for them near water sources or large trees with hollows at dusk or dawn. Use a red-filtered flashlight to observe them at night without causing significant distress.
Interesting Facts
The name raccoon comes from the Powhatan word 'aroughcun', which means 'one who rubs, scrubs and scratches with its hands'. They are famous for 'washing' their food, a behavior called dousing which enhances their tactile sensation.
