Wall Lizard
Scientific Name: Podarcis muralis
Category: reptile

Brief Description
A small, slender lizard hidden among the grey rocks and dry grass, exhibiting excellent cryptic coloration.
Characteristics
Slender body with a long tail and pointed head. The coloration is typically brownish-grey with darker markings or spots that provide camouflage against rocky or gravelly substrates.
Habitat
Often found in rocky environments, stone walls, scree slopes, and urban areas with plenty of crevices for hiding.
When to Find It
Diurnal; most active during warm, sunny days from spring through autumn. Hibernates in winter.
Conservation Status
Least Concern (IUCN)
Ecological Role
Acts as both a predator of small invertebrates (insects, spiders) and prey for birds and larger mammals.
Easily Confused With
Common Lizard (Zootoca vivipara); distinguished by the Wall Lizard's more slender build, longer tail, and preference for vertical surfaces.
Observation Tips
Look for movement on sun-warmed rocks or walls. They are very fast and shy, so approach slowly and avoid casting a shadow over them.
Interesting Facts
Wall lizards can drop their tails if grabbed by a predator, a process known as autotomy; the tail eventually regrows.
